General overview of Chinese media and global media in China-case study of “Chinese Beauty” and “Cosmopolitan”

 

1. Research bacground
With the economic globalization Pushing the development of the world culture into a new historical Period-- cultural globalization, many scholars in media field begin to recognize media as an activity of communieation between different cultures. Christiane Nord replaces “media” with “intercultural communication” while
Holz-Manttari substitutes it with “iniercultural cooperation”. Andre Levefere views media as “acculturation” and R.Daniel Shaw makes up the word “transculturation” (GuoJianzhong, 2002:272). In the meanwhile, media theorists begin to consider broader issues of context, history, tradition, convention and so on in media.Media has become an important channel for all the people with different languages and cultures to make each other more understanding and appreciate the cultural fruits made by the human beings in the world. Scholar William Bright said, “Media can beseenhttps://www.51lunwen.org/mediamanagement/2012/0607/1605272656.html  as the transfer of message not only from one language to another, but also from a given source to a given set of receptors, each with a given background and culture”. (Bright, 1992:179) What he said above does indieate that media should not only represent the content of the original works by transforming its linguistic equivalence, but also fulfill the responsibility of transmitting the cultural faetors. Media is in fact a bridge to promote cultural exchanges between people in differentnations. As a bridge, its first and foremost aim should be to promote mutual understanding between different languages and cultures. Since so closely media is related to culture, another question naturally arises: How do media people deal with cultural factors in media, especially when the source culture is extremely different from the target culture? Reflected in media strategies, the debate between domestication and foreignization begins to replace the argument between free media and literal media.
