Modern technology develops rapidly. It has brought extraordinary efficiency andpleasure to the production and human life. In addition, technology has exerted aprofound and lasting influence on language practice of human society. English forscience and technology (EST) has developed into a branch of independent writing styleand has been researched by all kinds of people gradually. It appears and develops withthe appearance and development of science and technology, and then arouses theattention of scientific community and linguistic field. The increasing focus on scienceand technological applications results in extensive search for new materials whichhave unusual or superior properties. Their names can be categorized into newsubstances and registered trademarks and brand names, such as Teflon. They are partsof scientific terminology. Referring to EST, the compound words, especially thecompound noun, are critical, because this kind of words occupies an overwhelmingproportion in EST.
In the long time of practice of translation, most translators have summarized thatseveral kinds of methods of translating compound words in EST, such as paraphrase(e.g. cryptogram 密码、antibiotic 抗生素), transliteration (e.g. blackboard 黑板),mixing translation(e.g. force pump 压力泵、 radar screen 雷达荧光屏 ) ， formtranslation(e.g. J-particle J 粒子、X-ray X 射线) and image translation(e.g. S-turning S形弯道、T-bolt T 形螺栓)(Zhang Jingwei, 2004: 134). There is an example for themethod of paraphrase. “The young man tried to tell police he had nothing to do withthe theft, but when they looked in the trunk of his car he was caught red-handed.”“Red-handed” originally refers to the murder whose hands touch blood on the spot.However , in the example, it has to be translated as “ 人赃俱获 ”(ZhangZhenjiu,2009:73). When a new compound word comes into being, because thetranslator is not familiar with the connotation, they can not seize his meaning correctlyand deeply. Consequently, they use the method of transliteration. This method also canbe used for translating some single word, for example, hormone and combine. Theytranslate these two words as “荷尔蒙” and “康拜恩”. However, when the translatorhave recognized the connotation of these compound words basically, these two wordsare translated into “激素”和“联合收割机”(Shao Qixiang,1991:74).

1.2 Theoretical and Practical Significance
Theoretically, the research of compound nouns in EST would promote thedevelopment of EST. EST refers to English which is used in scientific works, papers,textbooks, scientific reports and academic speeches on the aspects of natural scienceand engineering technology.
