Conclusion

When the author studies the evolvement of EST translation, the author knowsthat the traditional EST translation was based on the register theory. The traditionalEST translation focused on the lexical and grammar features of EST. It was a kind ofstatic，thus it had inevitable short comings in the traditional EST translation. And inturn the traditional translation approaches correspondingly were confined to thesurface structure of the sentence, which made the EST translation rigid as well.Thus in this paper the authors aims to study the English-to-Chinese ESTtranslation from a new perspectivethat is from the perspective of the discoursetheory.Then the main body of the paper discusses the content of the EST study from theperspective of discourse, and their application in E-C EST translation. This part is alsothe main findings of the author in this paper. To be specific, the findings of the E-CEST translation from the perspective of discourse covers the cohesion, the coherenceand the rhetorical structure in EST discourse and their application in E-C ESTdiscourse translation.
The cohesion in the EST discourse are characterized by reference cohesion,substitution cohesion & ellipsis cohesion, other grammatical cohesion，lexicalcohesion and logical connector. The coherence in the EST discourse include overtcoherence and covert coherence. To some extent, the cohesion and coherence could beregarded as the connectivity in EST discourse. The difference lies in that each of themfocuses on the different aspect of the EST discourse connectivity. The cohesion inEST discourse focuses on the apparent structural connectivity, whereas the coherencein EST discourse emphasizes on the inferred semantic relationship between thesentences.Then the rhetorical structure is also an indispensable part in the content of E-CEST translation study from the perspective of discourse analysis. The rhetoricalstructure is composed of three levels---the topic, the rhetorical function and therhetorical techniques. All the specific approaches in discourse analysis would beapplied to the practice---that is the E-C translation of the EST discourse.Throughout the whole Chapter Three, many EST discourse cases and theircomparative E-C EST translation versions are presented after the elaboration of theE-C EST translation study from the angle of cohesion, coherence and rhetorical structure respectively.
