2.2 Cohesion
Halliday and Hasan (2001: 4) regard cohesion "occurs where theINTERPRETATION of some element in the discourse is dependent on that ofanother", and the "concept of cohesion is a semantic one; it refers to relations ofmeaning that exist within the text, and that define it as a text."Cohesion is considered as one of lexical or grammatical features within thediscourse by Huang Guowen (Liao 2004; 25). Similarly, Richards (2005:110)defines that: "Cohesion is the grammatical and/or lexical relationships betweenthe different elements of a text. This may be the relationship between differentsentences or between different parts of a sentence”. According to Johnson andJohnson (2001; 55)，cohesion “is a semantic notion referring to relations ofmeaning between elements of a text"Quirk et al (1985: 1423) defined that cohesion as “the formal linguisticrealization of semantic and pragmatic relations between clauses and sentences in atext，’ (cited in Luo & Liu 2003).Researching on cohesion is prosperous abroad and in China. Linguists putforward their illustrations and analyses on cohesion: Some develop theories andsome apply cohesion theory into discourse analyses. For example, studies oncohesion in literature, in EST, in documents and so on.

Conclusion

On the other side, Chi-square calculator is convenient to compare frequenciesof linguistic items in any pair of corpora. However, it is not suitable forcomparative analysis on relations between the corpus and its sub-corpora.Second is about the scope of cohesion.
