1.3 The objectives of the study研究目标
According to the traditional grammar, cleft sentence is a widely-used sentencestructure of emphasis. There have been many studies on English cleft sentence.Wh-cleft sentence and cleft sentences in other languages will not be considered muchin this thesis. Thus, basing on the previous study this thesis is a tentative study onEnglish cleft sentence, aiming at finding out the linguistic reasons of using cleftsentence. The ultimate aim is to understand better the nature of it-cleft sentence andthe motivations behind its use. Basing on the framework of the figure/ground theoryand prominence view, this thesis has made a study on the cleft sentence, resulting inproviding cognitive motivation for the cleft sentence and in supplying cognitiveinterpretations to all the grammatical features presented by the cleft sentence.
1.4 Thesis structure论文结构
This thesis consists of five chapters:Chapter one is to discuss the definition, an introduction in which the author talksabout the objectives and significance of this study, and finally shows the structure ofthis thesis.Chapter two is to have a literature view of different approaches to the study ofthe cleft sentence.Chapter three is to deal with the theoretical framework of this thesis. It willinclude two parts: the introduction of Figure/ground theory and the introduction of theprominence view.Chapter four gives the cognitive analysis of the cleft sentence.Chapter five is a conclusion of the whole thesis.
