Teahouse is a well-known play written by Laoshe. This dissertation willanalyse the characters' utterances in this play from the perspective of pragmatics byusing Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle. 　　1.1 Research Background研究背景
　　Teahouse, which was created by Laoshe, who is known as people's artist, isquite familiar to all of Chinese, even foreigners abroad. Teahouse is Lao she's classicwork and it is the best work representing Laoshe,s good mastery of language. It is acontemporary drama describing three periods in the Chinese history---the period afterWuxu Reform, the Warlord war period after the death of Yuan Shikai, and the periodafter the victory against Janpanese invasion. Taking the three periods as background,Laoshe described various experience and different fate of both the manager andcustomers of the teahouse. In the play, there are a lot of conversations between thesecharacters and all of their utterances are so lively and distinct. This play is not onlypraised as a classic work of describing Chinese modem history but also has anenormous value of literature research. Nowadays, many Chinese scholars have apassion to study this play from various points of view，for example，the comparison oftwo translating versions of Teahouse, the spiritual and cultural value of the play andthe characteristics and perfonning of actors and actresses on the stage and so on.Few researchers have studied the characters' utterances in Teahouse from theperspective of pragmatics.Pragmatics, as a crucial component of modem linguistics，has receivedconsiderable attention from linguists. Though it was only proposed since the secondhalf of the 20^^ century, its development is very rapid. Some famous linguists likeH.R Grice, S. Levinson, G. Leech, G. Yule, etc. have all put forward some classictheories about pragmatics. Grice proposed the Cooperative Principle (CP) whichillustrates the rules people should abide by in communication. However, peopleoften violate the CP and therefore produce conversational implicatures. That is,what they really mean is different from what they said. Grice's theory ofconversational implicature attempts to “explain how a hearer gets from what is said towhat is meant, from the level of expressed meaning to the level of implied meaning”(Thomas, 1995:56). Politeness, as one of the reasons why indirectness is often used,has been explored ardently. In terms of principle and maxims，Leech formulated hispoliteness theory, which is expected to rescue Grice's CP and explain conversationalimplicature.
