After all, moststudents may use English to communication only in English classes, especially the students inrural areas.So, after reading and studying some materials on cooperative learning and oral Englishteaching, the writer began a one-term-long experiment to test whether cooperative learningcan help improve the students’ ability efficiently and effectively.The study focuses on the application of cooperative learning in oral English classes. Themeans are questionnaires, oral English tests and a comparative experiment. Cooperativeactivities such as pole-play, discussion, debate, interview etc were used in the experimentalclass and while in the control class the traditional teaching form was used continually. Thewriter intents to present a concrete and detailed study about how the cooperative learning canbe used in oral English classes. This is the first and main purpose of the research. Fromcomparing the results from the tests and questionnaires, the validity of cooperative learningcan be seen.Secondly, the writer will observe and write down some problems in the application ofcooperative learning during the whole experiment, intending to provide some usefulsuggestions to the junior school teachers in the first line of teaching.If the student and teachers can benefit from this study, then all the work will bemeaningful.


Chapter 2 Literature Review


2.1 Oral English Teaching
It is known to all that English is very popular and widely used in the fast developingworld. Besides the native speakers, more than 1800 million people speak it as secondlanguage. In 2008, in order to hold the 29th Olympic Games successfully, a number of peopleof different ages tried to speak English with great enthusiasm. Oral English was put moreattention then and from then on. Teaching oral English is also becoming especially important.Then what is oral English ability? How to improve the oral English ability?In 1970s, Dell Hymes put forward the notion of communicative competence. Accordingto him, oral ability is the overall underlying knowledge and ability for language use which thespeaker-listener possesses. It contains both grammatical knowledge and language use.
Generally speaking, oral ability refers to the communicative competence. It’s theknowledge and ability to show appropriate behavior especially discourses in the interactioncontext. In the writer’s view, oral English ability is a level that shows how fluently and freelythe learner expresses himself or herself in English. It can be assessed from different aspects.Firstly the pronunciation and intonation should be right. Then the fluency, accuracy, andappropriates are also important items. Meanwhile, there are many elements impacting theseaspects, such as vocabulary, grammar, and some affective elements like interest, motivationand self-confidence etc. So the improvement of oral English ability must take all theseaspects and elements into consideration, and build up the ability by daily impact,accumulation and practice.
