Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 The background of the research

By using the target language, we mean that the students are able to have successfulcommunications with others in the target language. So to the junior school students, oralEnglish ability is a necessary demand and is very important to English learning.But the fact is that teachers and students pay little attention to English teaching andlearning. Maybe the reasons are as following: First of all, all the examinations, from dailytests to the high school entrance examination, contain no tests to oral ability. The teachers useall the classes to explain the words, sentences and grammars. Some don’t take oral ability intoaccount. Secondly, the oral ability maybe the most difficult ability to improve in limited time.It requires not only enough and suitable practice but also interest, motivation etc. Manystudents are too shy to speak English. Both these reasons lead to the appearance of “dumbEnglish”. Obviously, this existing circumstance isn’t consistent with what the NewCurriculum Standards demands.

The description to the first task of English teaching in theNew Curriculum Standards changes from “to have students master the basic knowledge andskills” into “to inspire and bring up the students’ English learning interest, develop theirability of independent learning and cooperative spirit”.The New Curriculum Standards not only demands a student-centered communicativecurriculum, but it also point out the necessary to transforming the teachers’ and students’roles. The students are the host of the learning and the teachers are not inputers any more.They shall be pals to the students.Then how can we change the traditional teaching form efficiently? How can we help ourstudents to use the target language to communicate better? Which approaches can be used inEnglish classes to change the situation efficiently and effectively? In order to solve all these problems, many teachers thought and tried kinds of new approaches. Some of them usedcooperative learning.


1.2 The purpose of the research
As said above, oral English teaching and learning is not so satisfying. Cooperativelearning, as one of the most effective learning approaches, is used by many teachers inreading, writing, especially problem-solving. But few teachers put this form of learning intooral English.The writer thinks that cooperative learning can improve the students’ oral abilityeffectively and successfully. Because language springs from interaction, oral languagelearning certainly can be improved in interaction.
