摘要:Four questions are raised and four correspondent hypotheses are put forwardaccordingly in chapter three. After a series of analysis on the data collected from thepresent research in chapter four, this section tries to offer answers one by one.

ns on the definition of languagetransfer. Concept “language transfer” was first put forward in Linguistic AcrossCulture (1957) by American linguist Robert Lado. Then it was applied into the fieldof second language learning. According to Robert Lado, in the process of secondlanguage learning learners depend on their mother tongue a lot, and they are inclinedto transfer the language form, meaning and relevant culture of their mother tongueinto the target language.Based on the definition of “transfer” given by Sajavaara, James consideredlanguage transfer to be the effect or influence that the first language learning has onthe second language learning. (James, 1980) Faerch and Kasper considered languagetransfer from a different perspective, thinking that language transfer is a linguistic andpsychological process in which the second language learners’ mother tongue is stirredup and then inter-language is used. (Faerch, C and Kasper, G, 1987) Faerch andKasper relate language transfer to inter-language in second language acquisition.Schachter suggested that the notion of language transfer should be defined as a kindof constraint that second language learners’ previous knowledge has on the newknowledge they are learning. (Schachter, 1993)

2.2 Overall Review of Relative Clause Learning
Relative clause, as a universal linguistic phenomenon, not only occupied anextremely important position in the area of syntactic analysis as well as the field oflanguage acquisition, but also caught much attention from linguistic researchers aswell as psycholinguistic researchers in the past three to four decades. Here thischapter will first talk about the definition and classification of the relative clause, thenmake a brief contrast between Chinese relative clause and English relative clause, andat last review several hypothesis or researches on relative clause acquisition. Relative clause, as one of the many universal grammatical structures, is used torestrict or modify noun or pronoun. For example, in the sentence “the girl whom Ilove is a nurse”, “the girl whom I love” is a relative clause or subordinate clause incontrast with the main clause “the girl is a nurse”, and the relative clause orsubordinate clause is used to modify the head noun/antecedent “the girl”. Also here“whom” in the relative clause is called relative pronoun whose function is to connectthe main clause with the subordinate clause or relative clause as well as to representthe head noun/antecedent in the relative clause. While another definition of relativeclause made by Cook is described as subordinate clauses that modify nouns with nounphrases in the main clause above them (Cook, 2000).
