eir habits of speaking Chinese, so they often use Chinese thinking mode to translate Chinese into English. The result is so-called Chinglish. Chinglish is speech or writing in English that shows the interference of Chinese language or the influence of Chinese culture. It is liable to bring about misunderstandings in intercultural communication and has become a great obstacle to English education in China. It is high time to attach importance to the problems brought about by Chinglish and seek solutions to cope with the problems in question.

2 Chinglish phenomena

In The Translator’s Guide to Chinglish, Joan Pinkham points out that “Chinglish, of course, is that misshapen, hybrid language that is neither English nor Chinese but that might be described as English with Chinese characteristics.” (Joan Pinkham, 2000) When we start to find out the cause of Chinglish and its solution, we should make it clear that what is Chinglish and what are the features of it.

2.1 What is Chinglish?

Chinglish is a kind of abnormal English, which is caused by the difference between the modes of Chinese thinking and English thinking or culture. It does not obey the English grammatical structure and just mechanically translate Chinese sentences into English, with obvious sign of Chinese and therefore can not be accepted by the native speakers of English. Chinglish refers to the English with the characters of Chinese pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. “Though this kind of English sometimes sounds substandard to English native speakers, but rely on language empathy”, (Du Zhengming, 1998) maybe some of them can be accepted, but sometimes this kin of English will make stupid mistakes and make the other people puzzled. It appears among the Chinese people who are studying English, though temporarily, but it’s an inevitable phenomenon.

2.2 Main features of Chinglish

In a sense, the features and the causes of Chinglish are inextricably connected with each other. This paper divided the features into three main aspects.

2.2.1 Vocabulary

Differ from authentic English; one of the obvious features of Chinglish is the misunderstanding of vocabulary which can be divided into three parts.

(1) Unnecessary words

“Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts.”(William Strunk, Jr., and E.B. White, 1979)

It follows that any words which perform no useful function in the sentence should be omitted. Unnecessary nouns and verbs is a common error made by Chinese people and it always appears in the forms of noun phrase and verb phrase. Here are two examples, sentence A is a Chinglish sentence and sentence B is the suggested revision:

A: living standards for the people in both urban and rural areas continued to rise

B: living standards in both urban and rural areas continued to rise

We can infer that the unnecessary noun phrase for the people, because the notion of living standards applies only to people.

A: We must make an improvement in our work.

B: We must improve our work.
