p;discourse through the analysis of linguistic features of news reports production, causes of possible differences from the perspective of political and cultural context and how the authority controls the news
Media to spread their viewpoints. On one hand, the significance of this thesis is that it attempts to find out the hidden ideological manipulation in the political news reports. And on the other hand, it suggests ways in which people might cast their gaze more widely to consider the situations in the news discourse of other languages and cultures. Furthermore, it will help people in improving the critical awareness and language sensitivity in the process of language learning. Through the review of previous research, the author finds that although the research of CDA on news reports is large in number, there are still several deficiencies that we should take into consideration.

Chapter Two Literature Review
CDA has been drawing an increasing attention since the late 1990s, and has become an irreplaceable genre in the field of sociology and linguistics. CDA is widely used in different contexts of social and political criticism and has a profound impact on them (Xin Bin, 1996). The goal of this chapter is to present what CDA is, as well as its development and new insights. A brief survey of the previous research of CDA is helpful for people to get more knowledge of research status quo in this field. And it will provide a valuable reference for the development in the future.
2.1 Relevant Notions of CDA
In Language and Control, Fowler, Hodge and Kress (1979) firstly propose to study public discourse through CDA, and say discourse analysis should explore the links between society and grammatical structure. CDA provides theories and methods for empirical study of the relationship between discourse and ideology. In CDA studies, language is defined as a kind of “social practice”, whose focus is on the context of language use (Fairclough and Wodak, 1997). A variety of definitions have been put forward by some researchers. Following is the most widely accepted definition of CDA given by Fairclough and van Dijk. CDA sees discourse as a form of social practice. Describing discourse as social practice implies a dialectical relationship between a particular discursive event and the situation (s), institution (s) and social structure (s), which frames it: The discursive event is shaped by them, but it also shapes them. That is, discourse is socially constitutive as well as socially conditioned——it constitutes situations, objects of knowledge, and the social identities of and relationships between people. It is constitutive both in the sense that it helps to sustain and reproduce the social status quo, and in the sense that it contributes to transforming it. Since discourse is socially consequential, it gives rise to important issues of power. Discursive practices may have major ideological effects——that is, they can help produce and reproduce unequal power relations &nbs
