2.2 Previous Research of CDA
This section aims at presenting a brief review on CDA, its different approaches based on the most significant scholars in this field at home and abroad, its development and new direction. Among the key scholars in this discipline, Kress, Wodak, Fairclough, and van Dijk represent the major approaches of CDA. Gunther Kress is a representative founder of critical linguistics. Some basic assumptions of CDA are described by Kress. Later, he conducts researches more widely and gains several significant achievements. In the article Critical Discourse Analysis (1990), he states that social production of sign is the fundamental issue in critical linguistics through the analysis of relationship between discourse and readers. He also tries to show how different social values and different patterns of expression affect each other and how they are arranged in the discourse. Allan Bell has studied about news language from 1970s. At the beginning, he only focuses on micro-linguistic level of news language. Later, his book The Language of News Media (1991) extends his studies to the macro-linguistic level of news language from the perspective of CDA. Under the guidance of discourse analysis and sociolinguistics, he concerns with the concept of the news story, the importance of the processes which produce news media language and the role of the readers. He believes that when conducting a CDA of news discourse, the embedded news values and ideologies should be observed in news texts.
