Chapter One Introduction
Most of our social, political knowledge and understanding about the world may be derived from news reports, because they provide the readers with some up-to-date information about various happenings both at home and abroad. Although news reports require maximum consistency with the facts, in the case of news reports on political issues, it is not true. They are embedded with particular ideologies and power relation. Critical discourse analysis (henceforth CDA) serves as an instrument to show familiarized ideological meanings and reveals how ideology and discourse influence each other. This
thesis aims at finding out how ideology and language are interrelated in the United States (U.S.) and the Republic of Korea (ROK, South Korea)’s 20 English news reports on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK, North Korea) third nuclear test. The following chapter will present the research background, research objectives, its significance as well as the arrangement of the thesis.
1.1 Research Background
CDA has profited from the contemporary development in pragmatics, social theory, and psychology. During the last 40 years, CDA has achieved fast development. Many linguists conduct critical analysis on different discourses from multidisciplinary aspects and search for the connection between discourse, ideology and society, which means to examine how language expresses power relation and ideology, or how the latter influences language use. Briefly, CDA is a sort of theoretical framework and research
methodology applied in discourse analysis, which connects language and language use with ideology. Western scholars like Fowler, Fairclough and van Dijk are the representatives in this field. CDA holds that the linguistic structures in discourses are not selected randomly, but are carefully chosen by the writer according to his standpoint and communicative purpose. Discourses are possibly loaded with ideological meanings at every level of the linguistic structures. The ideological meanings can influence and sometimes even determine the attitudes of the readers towards the specific issue. However, these ideological meanings in discourses are usually implicit to the readers. So CDA is used as an instrument to uncloak these familiarized ideological meanings to reveal the relationship between discourse and ideology.

1.2 Research Purpose and Significance
By adopting the three-dimensional model of CDA and transitivity, modality and thematic choice of systemic functional grammar (SFG), this thesis selects the U.S. and South Korea’s 20 English news reports on North Korea third nuclear test. The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate how the U.S. and South Korea’s different ideologies and values revealed in English news &nbs
