Chapter Two LITERATURE REVIEW
In foreign academic circles, the study of Katherine Mansfield and her works ismostly found in New Zealand and England. Mansfield is a writer with special identity,which means although she was born in New Zealand, she gained her literary reputationin England with works based on her memory of childhood in New Zealand. Therefore,the author’s ownership has always been disputed in the literary world; New Zealandscholars take Mansfield as an important writer in the
history of New Zealand literaturewhile English writers regard her as a prominent English Modernist novelist and aninnovator of artistic forms of English fiction. Mansfield and her works are highlypraised both in New Zealand and England, however, the content and emphasis of theirstudy are evidently different. In China, Mansfield and her works received the academicattention since 1980s with the publication of roughly sixty short stories, diaries andletters. Also, some related introductory articles and academic papers have beenpublished successively. The following parts will explain the foreign studies and thedomestic studies respectively.
2.1 Previous Studies of Katherine Mansfield and Her Works Abroad
In Western countries, studies on Katherine Mansfield and her works began from theearly 1980s. The study mainly includes the following aspects:Studies of Katherine Mansfield mainly explore her life experience and hercontribution to literature. One of the representatives in such field is Antony Alpers,who wrote the book The Life of Katherine Mansfield (1980) and was known as “thebest biographer of Katherine Mansfield” for the biography is generally recognized asthe most authoritative and valuable biography of Mansfield. In this book, AntonyAlpers gave us a detailed introduction of the condition of Mansfield’s birthplace inNew Zealand, her family members, growth, writing, roaming, relationship and death,and he collected many letters, diaries and
essays of Mansfield in it. Apart from thebiography, Alpers also compiled a collection of Mansfield’s short stories in timesequence, including eighty-seven works from 1898 to 1922.

2.2 Previous Studies of Mansfield and her works at Home
Generally speaking, the domestic study of Mansfield and her fiction mainlyinvolves the following aspects:The artistic features and innovative stylistics of Mansfield’s short stories had beenof academic concern since 1990s. One of the representatives in this aspect is ZhaoYoubin, whose articles analyzed the artistic characteristics of Mansfield’s works, suchas “Mansfield and Symbolism” (1998) and “The Later Literary Creation of Mansfield”(1999) Moreover, Kang Xiaoting used “A Dill Pickle” as an example to discuss “theartistic characteristics of Mansfield’s short stories, i.e. drawing inspiration from herown experiences, focusing on the theme of the sense of loneliness and disillusion ofwomen, and distinctive Modernist tendency”. (Kang, 2005: 60) Other scholars such asGuo Haixia and Zhao Wenlan have also given their attention on the artistic features ofMansfield’s works through their respective articles “The Alienation Theme ofMansfield’s Short Stories” (Guo, 2010: 66-70) and “An Analysis of the RepetitiveNarration in Mansfield’s ‘Mr. and Mrs. Dove’” (Zhao, 2013: 136-140).
