Chapter Four NARRATIVE VOICE IN MANSFIELD’SSHORT STORIES
As what has been mentioned above, traditional narratology usually neglects thepolitical significance and social characters of narrative voices, however, in Fictions ofAuthority, Lanser put more emphasis on the social factors of the female writers andtheir works. She combines the social identity with the narrative form, and presumesthat the authority of some certain kind of narrative voice generates from thecombination of both social characteristics of the author and literary devices he or sheemployed in the writing. Here the word “authority” is put forward to refer to theintellectual reputation, the ideological status and the aesthetic functions which isaffirmed or granted by fictions, writers, narrators, characters and textual activities(Lanser, 1992: 5). The discourse authority is formed during the complicated interactionof all those factors, and thus its features are related to the specific receptive community. However, in the past two centuries, the authority of a certain text is naturally attachedto the well-educated white males in traditional Western literature. Therefore, the keyfactor influencing the establishment of authority turns out to be the fact that to whatextent the narrator’s status will approximate that mainstream power. To a certaindegree, the writing techniques and strategies changing with the development ofliterature also contribute to the establishment of authority. Actually, each single authorof a certain published work is eager to ensure the validity of that work’s authority in agiven range of readers. In other words, both the selection of narrative voices and theadoption of narrative strategies help construct the work’s authority. Whereas, thenarrative voices are filled with intense confrontations, conflicts and challenges, and allthose contradictions are conveyed by using certain modal forms with ideologicalfeatures. Also, sometimes the conflicts can be solved in the same way. The followingparts will take several excerpts from Mansfield’s short stories as examples in order togive a further explanation of the aesthetic as well as functional effects of NarrativeVoice by analyzing the three kinds of narrative voices in her works.
