2.2 Definitions of Neologisms
The term neologism, borrowed from French néologisme in 1734, is first authenticated in English in 1772. According to Wikipedia, neologisms (from Greek ν?ο- néo-, “new and λ?γο?lógos”, “speech, and utterance”) refer to relatively new or isolated terms, words, or phrases and new usages of existing words. When comes to definitions of neologism, many dictionaries give different definitions to neologism and different scholars hold different ideas for their different research backgrounds. Now let’s take a look at definitions of neologism put forward by some dictionaries and scholars. Definitions of Neologism in dictionaries: According to Online Etymology Dictionary, neologism means “(1) practice of innovation in language; (2) new word or expression”. According to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English Online, neologism refers to “a new word or expression, or a word used with a new meaning”. According to Cambridge Dictionaries Online, a neologism means “a new word or expression, or a new meaning for an existing word”. According to Macmillan Dictionary Online, a neologism is “a new word or expression, or an existing word used with a new meaning”. Oxford English Dictionary Online defines neologism as “(1) a word or phrase which is new to the language; one which is newly coined; (2)the coining or use of new words or phrases.”
