Chapter Five A Case Study of the 68th UNGA Interpreting from Eco-translatology Perspective
According to E co-translatology, there is no cle ar cut be tween interpreters’ adaptation and selection. That’s to say, while interpreters are making some selection during the interpreting process, they have already adapted to som e environmental factors which have had som e influence on their selection. This chapter takes the 68th UNGA interpreting activities as examples, paying attention to the specif ic interpretational eco-environment and revealin g interpreters’ adaptive selection in linguistic, cultural and communicative dim ensions for the interpretation with the highest level of integrated adaptive se lection under the influence of the specific eco-environment.
5.1 The Interpretational Eco-environment of the 68th UNGA
Before taking a closer look at interpr eters’ adaptive selec tions, it is qu ite necessary to give a brief look at the speci fic interpretational eco-environment of 68th UNGA interpreting. As the author has explai ned in chapter three, the translational eco-environment can be divided into two as pects, namely the translation community and external environm ent. This section is well-targeted at describing the sp ecific interpretational eco-environment of the 68th UNGA interpreting. Since subjectsrefers to all th e living things that are involved in the translating activity, the subjects of this interpretational eco-field mainly includes: the interpreters, speech addressers and listeners from member nations of the UN, the president of this session of UNGA, representatives from all countries around the world, of ficers in different departments of the UN, other staff like the protocol officers and so on. They are closely interrelated and interacted in this ecological field, and together form a very challenging interpretational eco-environment. For interpreters, am ong these subjects the most important one is the speakers who would cast direct influence on interpreters’performance and the listener for whom the interpreters conduct their interpreting.
