CHAPTER FOURA RELATION PROJECTION ANALYSIS OF THE BA CONSTRUCTION

This chapter analyzes the characteristics of the ba construction and how the baconstruction is derived in terms of the proposed Rela P. This chapter is organized asfollows. Section 4.1 gives the definition and the properties of the relation projection.Section 4.2 is the analysis of ba in terms of the relation projection. Section 4.3demonstrates how many types the ba construction can be divided into. Section 4.4analyzes different types of the ba construction and how they are derived.

4.1 The definition of the relation projection

The relation projection is a projection that exits in the Chinese ba construction andother constructions like the double object construction. The head of the relationprojection together with the ba can mark the relation between different components.Different components have different kinds of relation. According to the relationbetween different components and the position of the head, the relation projectioncan be divided into three kinds. The first kind is the low relation projection (L-Rela P),the head of which is adjoined to V in the tree diagram with the meaning ofPOSSESSIVE. It, together with the ba, marks the POSSESSIVE relation between twocomponents. POSSESSIVE means that one individual is possessed by another. Forexample, juzi (orange) and pi (skin) in the sentence wo ba juzi bole pi (I peeled theorange) have a possessive relation. The second kind is the middle relation projection,the head of which is attached right above the v P with the meanings of LOSE,TRANSFER, LOCATION and EXISTENCE. It together with the the ba can mark theLOSE, TRANSFER and EXISTENCE relation between two components. LOSE meanssomething or somebody loses something. For example, pingguo (apple) and chileyiban (eat a half) in the sentence wanngwu ba pingguo chile yiban (Wangwu haseaten half of the apple) have a LOSE relation. In the sentence, the apple lost a halfbecause of somebody’s eating. So here, the head of M-Rela P together with ba marksa LOSE relation between pingguo (apple) and chile yiban (eat a half). TRANSFERmeans that something is transferred to another thing. Mian (flour) and rouchenglemantou (changed into flour) in sentence mama ba mian roucheng le mantou (Motherchanged the flour into puns) has a TRANSFER relation. In this sentence, the flour istransferred into steamed buns. So here, the head of M-Rela P, together with ba, marksa TRANSFER relation between mian and rouchengle mantou. EXISTENCE meansthat one thing exists in or on another thing. Hua (flower) and jiaole shui (watered it)in the sentence wo ba hua jiaole shui (I watered the flower) have an EXISTENCErelation. In the sentence, water exists on the flower after the flower is watered. So,the head of M-Rela P together with ba marks an EXISTENCE relation between hua(flower) and jiaole shui (watered it). The third kind is the high relation projection(H-Rela P), the head of which is attached right above ba P with the meanings ofDISPOSAL and CAUSE.
