CONCLUSION

The ba construction has been widely studied by many researchers from differentperspectives. It is a very unique construction. The uniqueness of this construction hasaroused the interest of many researchers. It is a commonly used construction inMandarin Chinese. It is of great significance to do researches on the ba construction.The status quo of the studies on the ba construction is that there are still a lot ofarguments over the syntactic category of ba in the ba construction. Hashimoto (1971)and Yang (1995) hold that ba is a lexical verb. However, many researchers argue thatba is not a verb, mainly because ba doesn’t behave like a verb according to thetraditional Verbhood Test: (i) it cannot take an aspect marker; (ii) it cannot form analternative V-not-V question; and (iii) it cannot serve as a simple answer to a question(A. Li 2006).Zhao (1970), Wang (1972) and Li (1974) prove that ba is a preposition andassigns case to the NP right behind ba (ba -NP). However, Goodall (1987) thinks thatif ba is a preposition, then the case and theta role of the ba NP will be assignedrepeatedly. Zou (1995) holds that ba is a functional category and ba P in his analysisis higher than Asp P and Neg P. Seeing that the present studies on the syntacticcategory of ba have not reached a consensus and there are still some problems withthe present studies, through detailed analysis, the author finds that the reason for thedebate over whether ba is a verb or some other categories is that ba has some specialability to take in some features of the verb and thus may sometimes appear to be averb. In fact, ba is grammticalized. The reason why it sometimes behaves like a verband it can assign case to the ba-NP is that ba can take in the verbhood feature of theverb in the ba construction.
