Part 2 Theoretical Framework and Related Literature

Skopos theory is the core of functional translation theory, which does not take its formuntil 1970s in German. Since it is put forward by Hans J. Vermeer, it has beencarefully studied and commented in the field of translation. (Fan Cunzhong, 1985)Vermeer comes to realize that translation is not merely linguistic problems and hebegins to deplore other methods to settle these issues. The theory demonstrates thespecial function of communicative context in translation from cultural perspective. Itbrings translation researchers a more profound analysis of translation (Fan Wenbo,2008). The basic concepts and translation rules of Skopos theory will be presented asfollows to provide a theoretical framework for EEE translation.

2.1 Related Literature
Translation activity has enjoyed a pretty long history and discussion about translationhas never ceased. However, translation studies, in a strict sense, began nearly fiftyyears ago. Since 1970s, articles and works have been published and institutions ontranslation studies have been launched since Holmes’ The Name and Nature ofTranslation Studies has been published. (Holmes, 1988: 70) The course of translationteaching has spread in hundreds of colleges and universities around the world andtranslation teaching comes to obtain its relative independent position as a newdiscipline. In the last 50 years, the western translation studies have experienced aclimax of translation theory research. Chinese scientific and technological translationcan be traced back to more than one thousand years ago, but unfortunately, few worksof scientific and technical translation have been left.

2.2 Theoretical Framework
Katharina Reiss is the leader of functional translation school, publishing her bookTranslation Criticism: Potentials & Limitations in 1971. In her work, she introducedthe concept of text typology to translation theory research and established atranslation critical theory. In her view, she approves with Eugene A. Nida’sequivalence theory that the source text is the core in translation. According to Reiss,the ideal translation would be one “in which the aim in the target language isequivalence as regards the conceptual content, linguistic form and communicative function of a source language text” (Nord, 2001:9). Katharina Reiss has alsocategorized three functions of: text informative function, expressive function andoperative function. (Katharina Reiss: 2004) Katharina Reiss is the first translationtheorist who has made a combination of translation and function and gives a clearclassification of text typology.
