2.2 Previous Studies on President Obama’s State of the Union Addresses 
For Lucas (1995), political speeches are addresses which a speaker, representing a  class  or  a  party,  gives  to  the  audience  in  terms  of  some  affairs  and  problems  in different aspects. The aim of political speeches is to persuade audiences to accept the belief  the  speaker  holds  and  thus  audiences  can  behave  as  the  speaker  expects.  The motivation  of  political  speeches  lies  in  the  lines  of  discourses.  Therefore,  for politicians,  the  ability  to  deliver  an  excellent  speech  is  a  powerful  weapon  in  their professions. The  State  of  the  Union  Addresses  mean  presidents’  annual  reports  to  the Congress. The American government’s agenda mainly expounds the situation at home and  abroad  and  policies  and  measures  the  government  will  take.  According  to  the custom,  at  the  beginning  of  each  year,  the  incumbent  president  will  do  an  annual report  in  congress  to  explain  the  government  policy.  After  two  hundred  years,  the State  of  the  Union  Address  has  become  a  basic  means  that  the  president  manages relations  with  the  Congress.  Especially,  the  development  of  technology  makes  the State  of  the  Union  Address  evolve  into  a  major  form  of  propaganda  from  an  empty policy  speech.  For  it  is  such  a  key  role  on  the  political  stage,  American  presidents attach  great  importance  to  the  State  of  the  Union  Address,  which  deserves  our attention.
