Chapter 2 Literature Review
2.1 Needs Analysis
Needs analysis is considered as the main subject and a important stage for ESP. Ofcourse, the important task of ESP is to make language learners have a good performance inthe certain situation and achieve their requirements for their future work development. Inorder to achieve this target, the first step is to analyze the English needs of students forcollege English teaching. But the researches of scholars ( like Richterich, 1978; West, 1994;Long, 2005) have revealed that there is not enough attention put on NA in the course design.Generally, a needs analysis of students is necessary for those who are in difficult situation.Need, a reflection of the objective requirement of human body to the inside and outsideenvironment, belonging to the human body’s a state of deficiency, shows the individualsubjective status and personality tendencies. Targets and content of needs include necessaryto satisfy physiological requirements such as food, or some complicated social and individualfactors, namely, knowledge, skills, achievements and reputation, etc. The following willpresent more definitions and classifications of needs in the language research field for us tobetter understand Needs Analysis. Because of different study methods and perspectives,different researchers define and classify needs diversely. Berwick(1989:52-55) thinks thatneeds refer to the “ gap or big difference between what is at present and what you want infuture”. In his opinion, he classifies needs as “felt needs” and “perceived needs”. The formerrefers to needs which learners have, while the later represents the coin-judgments of certifiedexperts the educational gap in other people’s experience.

2.2 Studies on Professional English at the Workplace
Since 1999, China has enlarged its enrollment for college students. English majorprograms have seen the largest percentage of increase in student numbers. The survey showsthat the market demand for foreign personnel is increasing. English, as a communicativelanguage in international trade market, plays an key role. As St John (1996) points out that'needs analysis is also about understanding the communication events which learners will joinin. It is basically consistent on the key communicative events of business because it consistsof a set of communicative characters as a system of communicative discourse. Yin and Wong(1990) set up seven core events are identified as the main content of the various businesstransactions in social contact. Among those events, telephoning, socializing, makingpresentations, taking part in meetings and negotiation are considered as the events requiringoral language; the other two events requiring the written form are: corresponding andreporting.
