r as an ancient civilized country is established, the earliest literary form is poetry. As the symbol of Pre-Qin poetry achievement, Book of Poetry is the earliest literary work. It includes three parts: Feng, Ya and Song. In Book of Poetry, there are many ballads, court poetry and sacrificial songs. They are simple and unadorned. In the whole history of ancient Chinese poetry, Tang poetry, Song Ci-poetry and Yuan Qu-poetry are the most spectacular. Being the precious cultural wealth from our ancestors, the tremendous amount of pomes records the history and the aspirations of the Chinese nation. The broadness and the profoundness of Chinese culture and the infinite charm of the Chinese language and literature are embodied in ancient Chinese poetry. 
It was Herbert Giles, Arthur Waley and some other foreigners who first introduced the Chinese poetry to other countries. They started this word at the very beginning of the 20th century. While in China, the study on English translation of Chinese poetry started in 1970s. Xu Yuanchong, Wii Juntao, Xu Zhongjie and Gladys Yang all have made outstanding contributions in the study. 

Nearly 30 years, China has achieved great success in economic area. Today, under the trend of globalization, to achieve more development, China has to be well understood by other countries, especially in culture. As an important part of Chinese culture, Chinese poetry needs a correct understanding and the translation. Chinese poetry is especially significant, because it directly matters the exchanges and the merge of Chinese and foreign cultures. However, there are many cultural barriers in the process of translating Chinese poetry into English.
This paper is trying to study how to overcome barriers in the process of translating Chinese poetry into English, and explored the translation strategies. 

Cultural study is an important aspect of translation researches. The cultural factor is very important in translation theories and practices. As the leading translation studies scholars Andre Lefevere and Susan Bassnett argue: “the study of translation is the study of cultural interaction” (Gentzler. 2004). It is now widely recognized that translation is not only an activity of language transmission, but also cultural transplantation and interfusion. 
The cultural approach of translation study presumes a shift of emphasis and perspective from the traditional way of study. This paper lays emphasis on the communication and interaction between two cultures represented in the action of translating Chinese poetic images, trying to find the cultural significance deep in certain existing translation phenomena. 


Part Ⅱ. Cultural Approach in Translation Studies of Poetry 
2.1 The Definition of Culture

Culture has a history as long as that of human being. This concept is so old that we can not be sure how many definitions it has gained. Yet it is so modern that it is still being re-interpreted time and again by scholars up till today. For example, in 1952, two American anthropologists published a list of 160 different definitions of culture (Bodley, 1994).
