However, the function of Chinese stress is not so obvious. The rule of English sentence stress is to stress informative words but unstressed functional words. The tune of the stressed syllable is higher; its articulation is clearer and occupies a longer time. However, the tune of the unstressed syllable is lower. Its articulation is ambiguous and the articulation time is pressing. The stressed syllables alternate with the unstressed syllables. The more the unstressed syllables between the stressed syllables are, the faster we will read. From this forms the rhythmic pattern that the stressed and unstressed syllables appear alternately. A rhythmic group is made up by a stressed syllable and the unstressed syllables before the next stressed syllable. Every rhythmic group almost occupies the same time, for many Chinese characters have one of four tones, namely, ping, shang, qu, ru. The articulation of every character must be clear. This is the special lilting rhythm of Chinese. Under the influence of Chinese many students are inclined to read word by word clearly. Thus, they have destroyed the special rhythm of English. In fact, many English words have two kinds of articulation: stressed reading and unstressed reading. The stressed articulation is called stressed reading and the unstressed articulation is soft reading. For example, in the unstressed syllable, and / ′ nd / can be read as / ′ənd /, and of / as / ′əf /. Some words appear very frequently in speeches, so when we read such words, we should read softly and should not use a long time to read them too clearly. Mastering the weak reading is very important for students to master the English rhythm. However, in Chinese, expect some functional words that have no time and need to read softly, almost all characters have the same stress. Knowing this difference between Chinese and English is also important to master the English rhythm. Because of such difference in rhyme, many students can hear every single English word clearly, but they can’t understand the whole sentences. Besides due to their habit about Chinese pronunciation, they find it difficult for them to adapt to the phenomenon of liaison in English.
Ⅳ Solutions
There are many differences between Chinese and English pronunciation, and Chinese pronunciation has made significant impacts on English pronunciation. This leads to some students’ poor oral English and listening. To improve our English level, how should we solve this problem? The following may be a good help for us to learn English.
4.1 Rational Imitation
Imitation is often regarded as the most effective way to learn pronunciation. Both in class and after class the teachers should urge the students to do more imitation exercise, but imitation should be based on scientific knowledge of English phonetics. Language is a kind of physiological phenomenon, and it is the product of vocal organ of human beings. Therefore, we must understand how our vocal organs work, and we must know the name, the place, and the function of every vocal organ.
