关键词:《简·爱》冰与火的意象The Images of Ice and Firein Jane EyreEnglish literature history

摘要:The two images of “ice” and “fire” appear in the novel frequently, which are closely related to the hero’s and the heroine’s fates. One has become the symbol of sadness, misery and despair, and the presentation of ice is always in the time when the heroine is in most miserable conditions and in the most despair mood.

. In the excuse of God's decree, he also forces Jane to be his wife. His unselfishness in the surface covers his regardless of Jane Eyre’s live sentiment. He wants to take Jane as his wife not out of love, but he thinks that she is suitable to be a wife to a missionary, and a tool of a missionary. The missionary’s wife has marriage but no love, while the master of the Thornfield can give her love but no marriage. But for St. John, Jane Eyre feels the greater threat than Mr. Rochester. St. John would transform Jane all the help to his career, but for Mr. Rochester, he can not make her become something he needs, “the marriage with St. John”will kill her. His requirements seem to be in the gorgeous reasons. The woman’s living conditions in the andocentric discourse seem weightless. Jane Eyre, who has studied and thought for many years, has the knowledge and the power to dominate her own life. She refuses this marriage without love. Although she has no good looks and fortune, she has the independent and perfect spirit which is incomparable by the beauties in the Victorian times. She has no gorgeous exterior conditions of St. John, but she has richer sentimental world than St. John.

The power of Jane Eyre’s discourse is contained in the response to St. John. Here, the readers also feel Jane Eyre’s power and resolving attitude in the reply fully and directly. Compared with the previous figures, St. John is a character with the reasonable image that has the extraordinary wisdom to persuade others:

“Go to somewhere else to look for, not me, St. John; find a suitable person for yourself.”

“You mean to find one suitable for my purpose-for my profession. I speak to you for one more time. I am not an insignificant person-the one with personal selfish common feeling, and I wish to get married as a missionary.”

“In this way, I will devote my energy to missionary-this is what he needs-not me; that is the pericarp and shell outside of the stone. He has no use of them; and I will keep them.”

“You could not keep-should not. Do you think God will be satisfied with half an offering? Will God accept a deformed sacrifice? What I support is God’s career; I am standing under God’s flag to summon you. I could not accept the intersected faithfulness in representation of God; it should be completed. ”

“Oh! I would like to give my heart to God.” I said, “You do not need it.”

So far, the image of Jane Eyre has already presented in front of the readers vividly through the repeated appearance of two images of “ice” and “fire”. It is seemed clearly that a female who resents the dark world and detests the unreasonable affairs, dares to rebel, and dares to pursue, and a marble hearted pastor St. John, obviously becomes the pronoun of “ice”. The two images of ice and fire seem to become the silent languages of the heroine, and always express the characters’ happiness, angry, sadness and sorrow. The ice and fire seem to melt with the heroine, thus it highlights the rebellious characteristics of the heroine. The extreme images ice and fire have been used flexibly in the portrait of the characters’ direct lining and counter lining, and also represents the author’s wise creation technique.
