关键词:《简·爱》冰与火的意象The Images of Ice and Firein Jane EyreEnglish literature history

摘要:The two images of “ice” and “fire” appear in the novel frequently, which are closely related to the hero’s and the heroine’s fates. One has become the symbol of sadness, misery and despair, and the presentation of ice is always in the time when the heroine is in most miserable conditions and in the most despair mood.

fire. Mr. Rochester is very masculine, experienced and mature, with the overflowed enthusiasm, daring to hate or to love. He adores the independent, calm and intellectual, smart Jane Eyre. Although she has the plain looking, she has the independent humanity and dares to pursue the true love. Therefore, they have affections towards each other and have the passion to burn out, and the blazing love is just like the burning flame. Mr. Rochester, who loves Jane deeply, has his whole face burning with the love flame, and has always been using the burning bright eyes to look at Jane Eyre. Whenever he speaks to Jane Eyre about his affections, his words are always ardent and passionate, which is his vehement love for Jane Eyre. When Mr. Rochester disguises himself as a witch and tells the fortune for Jane Eyre, “twinkling flame in eyes”, which is the ardency and passion that Mr. Rochester interprets from Jane Eyre’s eyes and which is just his vehement love for Jane Eyre. Their love has exceeds the traditionl conception such as money, status, and it is the satire and resistance against the marriage system based on money. However, Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester's love is not smooth. The true love needs a fire test, and should go through the fire test. At that night with night light, when Mr. Rochester proposes to Jane Eyre, Jane requires to see Mr. Rochester’s face, and he replies, “ look, but not too quick, since I am unhappy.” But his face is very red because of the strong emotion, with the fantastic lights in his eyes. At that time, the wind begins to blow, and the chestnut, which is the lively image the Romanticists like to use, is hacked into two halves, and this symbolized the setback which their love comes across. When Mr. Rochester is exposed that he has been in marriage and can not marry Jane, he shouts with grief and indignation, “the bigamy is a ugly and evil word…will suffer the severe punishment, even suffer the torture from the imperishable fire, and the eternal maggot” This is the angry whoop which Mr. Rochester expresses on the despotic humanity from the social system and its bias, and this is his representation of his rebelliousness; this evil fire reveals the dark side of the social system. This image deepens the theme, and reflects Mr. Rochester’s angry and painful mood. There is another passage of Mr. Rochester’s confession, and this could be the most excellent image depiction in Jane Eyre. When Mr. Rochester tell Jane out of his earnest love, “…there comes the vehement sublime passion in my heart, which is towards you, attracts you to the centre and the wellhead in my life, uses my life to wrap you-the flaming purifying fire melts you and me into one.”Mr. Rochester’s words are the whoop out of the bottom of his heart. In this whoop, it seems that Mr. Rochester himself burns just because of love. This fire not only makes the love sublimes, but also makes two souls nirvana and amalgamation. In the warmth and vehemence of the fire, Mr. Rochester has combined with Jane, which is just like the combination between the lovers. This is not the combination of the bodies, but the clash of the souls. The fire burns out all the shackles of the love. The souls of protogonists are just like two flames, that burn out all grime and gain the new lives as the nirvana of phoenix. “The fire is me, and the fire is you”, indeed, the highest sublime of the fire is the purification. The fire burns out the love and the hatred. In the burning, everything论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
