摘要:In the novel Oliver Twist, Dickens depicted a vivid character of little hero. He is pure, kind, ignorant in spite of the evil environment he is in. Although he is born without parents, he is natured in a miserable workhouse and he is abused by the gang of thieves, he still keeps his good virtue.

natural charm, innocence, and. As a matter of fact, Dickens gives readers and exact depiction of Oliver at the beginning of the novel.
From his birth, Oliver is thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He was born and brought up in the workhouse and suffered a lot of pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. He still wants to be loved. It is a miserable place but there are also some advantages of the workhouse. For example, the workhouse is a close circumstance. In this situation, he formed an innocent character. In addition, Oliver is so pure that he can scarcely comprehend evil and do not know what is evil. Nancy once treated badly about him and helps to recapture him and sent him to the thief’s den again. But he still tries to help her rather than hate her.
Most people in the novel speak Cockney slang. But Oliver speaks in proper King’s English. This shows Oliver Twist’s innate moral goodness. When he was forced to participate in a robbery, Oliver merely begs to be allowed to “run away and die in the field.” Oliver does not present a complex character of a person between good and evil. As a matter of fact, he is goodness incarnate. When evil force surrounds him, he remains unaffected and displays an inner strength to protect him. It is his natural goodness and instinct for survival that help him to overcome the difficulties of life, and live a happy life at last.
When the people around Oliver steal something, he reacts with shock and horror at the idea of stealing. But we do not know where he has acquired such moral value. He could not have learned it from the workhouse. We could conclude that it is his innate goodness that makes him resist vice instinctively. Dickens clearly protests against the idea that the poor was born with an affinity for vice and crime. Yet it sometimes seems as if Oliver has been born with and affinity for virtue and love. Dickens use Oliver’s character to challenge the Victorian idea that paupers and criminals are already evil at birth, arguing instead that a corrupt environment is the source of vice.

B. the Corrupted Characters of Nancy

Different from Oliver, Nancy is influenced by the surrounding environment, although she is kind at birth. Nancy was corrupted at the age of six by Fagin. She is about only seventeen in the book. Nancy is Sikes’s partner in crime. As a child of the streets, Nancy has been a thief and drinks to excess. She works at a public bar, drinks heavily, and has a side job as a prostitute. She is immersed in the vices condemned by her society.
Nancy could truly represent the paupers in Victorian Age. As a prostitute, It could show that all the degradation into which poverty could force otherwise good people. Nancy is a prostitute. She wondered at London’s dirty street. She is poor and her profession is thieves and prostitutes. Nancy’s words in the novel tell readers that she has worked for Fagin when she is little a child. In the heart of every child, they are eager to have a warm family. Fagin uses Nancy’s psychology to induce her into the family of thieves. But such a “family” makes her become corrupted and compels Nancy to kidnap Oliver for Fagin. Nancy gradually becomes corrupted and serves for Fagin. In this novel, Nancy’s “laugh” give readers deep impression. For example, she “laughed hysterically”, “the girl laughed again. “Miss Nancy burst into aloud laugh”. There is a lot depiction about Nancy’s laugh. As we al论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
