A major concern of the novel Oliver Twist is the question of whether a bad environment can irrevocably poison people’s character and soul. There are many characters that are all good and can barely comprehend evil, such as Oliver, Rose, and Brownlow. There are also some characters that are all evil and can barely comprehend goodness, for example, Fagin and Sikes. Although Oliver was born without parents and in a dirty environment, even he has got terrible education from the gang of Fagin; he still has a pure heart and can not be polluted by the darkness and evil. Other reasons why Oliver could keep purity in a evil society is because he also get some help from other people.

B. Representations of Oliver Twist’ Characters in His Experience Part

As a little child, Oliver has experience a lot. In order to have analysis about the character of Oliver, we will firstly have a review on the experience of Oliver. Oliver is born in a workhouse. Her mother died when Oliver is born. So he has no idea of his parents’ identity. Oliver is orphan at the beginning of the novel. In workhouse, all the children do a lot of hard jobs and often hungry. By a pure chance he is chosen as a scapegoat by the other starving boys to go and ask for an extra helping at a mealtime. So he said “Please, sir, I want some more”. As a result of this request, he is sold by the workhouse as an undertaker’s apprentice. He behaves well and gets the praise of the Boss. But unfortunately, the older apprentice laughed at Oliver’s mother. Oliver run away and finds his way to London. In London, he got the help of a boy criminal named Artful Dodger. Artful introduces Oliver into his circle of friends and recommend Oliver to a criminal master, Fagin and his brutal ally, Bill Sikes. Oliver is taught crimes such as picking pockets. But he never actually participates in them. He is shown kindness by Bill’s mistress, Nancy.
After a robbery that goes wrong, Oliver is caught by the police and was took to the police office. Fortunately, a wealthy man, Mr. Brownlow proved his innocence and Oliver is released by the police and took the home of Mr. Brownlow. Then Oliver is caught by the group member of Fagin. Sikes and Nancy snatch Oliver back. They want to have a burglary of Mr. Brownlow’s home. This planed failed at last and Oliver is shot but saved by others.
In the meanwhile, Fagin and Sikes are plotting to try to go after Oliver again and kill him. Nancy wants to help Oliver to escape this place. She contacts with Mr. Brownlow and hope that Mr. Brownlow will save Oliver. Fagin found this and then Nancy is killed cruelly by Sikes. At last, Sikes lost his life in the pursuit of police. Fagin is arrested and put into prison for his crimes. Oliver lives happily with his savior, Mr. Brownlow.
