The fastpace of information exchange requires efficiency and accuracy of translating, so it isnecessary for a translator to grasp the typical features of News English. According to differentstandards, News English can be sub-divided into many categories, and to facilitate thediscussion of translation this thesis mainly focuses on News English reporting, which iscomposed of headline, lead and body.The typical language used in News English reporting is often termed as “JournalisticEnglish”, and one of the most distinctive features of journalistic English is the employment ofrhetorical devices. Rhetorical devices, which are also termed as “stylistic devices” or “figuresof speech”, “involve deviation from the ordinary and literal meaning of words”(Feng 168).Rhetorical devices are indispensable in News English, because they can bring freshness andvigor to news reporting, and enable the news to be vivid and impressive. In News Reportingand Writing the authors propose five elements of good writing of News English, and usingrhetorical devices is one of them. “With similes and metaphors, writers draw wordpictures…The techniques [rhetorical devices] set the pages of a scrapbook of images turningin each reader’s mind” (Brooks et al. 94).While rhetorical devices add vitality to the descriptions and narrations in news reporting,they also pose difficulty for translators because of their unique combination of meaning andform, and the special context of News English
The translation of rhetorical devices in News English is different from that in literatureworks in that “the main functions of news reporting are to provide information and to make acomment” (Wang 197). In the 1970s, German functionalist Hans J. Vermeer put forward theSkopos Theory, which provided a useful perspective for practical translation. Functionalistsview translation as a purposeful activity, and Vermeer holds that the “skopos” or purpose of atranslation task serves as the prime principle of guiding the translating process, and thetranslator should make suitable adjustments to fulfill that purpose. Therefore, the strategies oftranslating rhetorical devices in News English should be in accordance with the purpose of thetranslation process, and translators are required to choose appropriate strategies to producetexts that are comprehensible and acceptable to the target readers.When translating News English into Chinese, it is essential for translators to explore the frequently used rhetorical devices in News English, and observe certain principles, includinggeneral principles and those specific ones for the translation of News English.
