Lawsuit, academic papers, advertisements texts,business letters, all these contexts are comprehended with the assistance of hedges.Hedges help people convey their ideas or state facts more politely and flexibly,sometimes even create conversational implicatures through common knowledge. Indaily oral and written communication, people use hedges unconsciously to imply theiruncertainty about the proposition in discussion. Therefore, there are sound reasons forconducting more researches of hedges in all contexts.Newspaper and news website serves as the transfer station of latest information,through which people can have easier access to happenings at abroad and home.Language used in news reports also reflect and affect people's thoughts. As anindispensable member of social life, news reports deserve linguistic attention. Eventhough many researches have been conducted to unravel the mystery of hedges informal and informal texts, the field of news reports still lacks exploration. There arealso a few of researches on contrastive analysis of hedges in Chinese and Englishnews texts, which are viewed from the perspective of contrastive linguistics. However,despite the existing studies of hedges in news, news articles still worth analyzing fromother angles of hedging usage. This present paper analyzes the frequency and distribution of hedges used in AEN and CEN (written by Chinese and American newswriters respectively). The significance of conducting this research lies in thefollowing three aspects. Firstly, through this paper, Chinese native speakers canrealize the existence of hedges in English and utilize them in English writing andspeaking. Secondly, according to the results of this research, English learners shouldunderstand that negative transfer of Chinese language may lead to improper use ofhedges in English and avoid relevant problems. Lastly, this present paper is alsosignificant to news translators. The better comprehension and usage of hedges canhelp them attain the similar reaction in target language readers.

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Study of Fuzzy Language and Hedges Abroad
The research of vagueness or fuzziness can be traced back along hundreds ofyears. Saussure, father of the modem linguists, mentioned the idea of fuzziness in hisEcrits de linguistique generale {Course in General Linguistics). In 1923, Britishphilosopher Russell published his paper Vagueness in Australasian Journal ofPsychology and Philosophy, in which he claimed that language is fuzzy.The birth of fuzzy linguistics was closely connected with the development offuzzy mathematics. L. A. Zadeh (1965), an expert in electronic engineeringcybernetics published Fuzzy sets in Information and Control, which marked the birthof fuzziness theory.As a member of the family of ftizzy linguistics, hedge appeared, for the first time,in Lakoff's paper—Hedges: a study in meaning criteria and the logic of fuzzy concepts.And in this very paper, hedge was defined as "For me, some of the most interestingquestions are raised by the study of words whose meaning implicitly involvesfuzziness-words whose job is to make things fuzzier or less fuzzier.
