a. With the aid of retrospection, this is not an ideal alternative. This may have been a viable consideration upon the first request of involvement of the school counselor. However, at this period in time, there have been multiple disturbing complaints regarding Mr. Loughner’s behavior demanding a more substantial response.

While this alternative seems to remedy the immediate circumstance by eliminating Mr. Loughner’s presence from the current academic setting, it is really only a Band-Aid in the setting of mental illness. While the recommendation was made that Mr. Loughner seek mental health evaluation, hope is not a plan.

Clark Romans, executive director of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), is cited as saying: “Loughner’s behavior is a real red flag to somebody who could recognize it for what it is” (Reinhart, 2011, p. 3). I am of the conviction, that by profession, it is the school counselor’s responsibility to be able to recognize potential red flags and act upon them. In this context, I believe that mandating Mr. Loughner to undergo comprehensive mental health evaluation is the best interest of both Mr. Loughner and the public. 
Predict the possible consequences for those acceptable alternatives. 
a. Mr. Loughner may respond to verbal reprimand and continue his educational pursuits uneventfully. 
Mr. Loughner’s mental status may continue to deteriorate with public displays of anger and hostility increasing. 
b. Mr. Loughner may submit to mental health evaluation and treatment allowing him to successfully continue academic endeavors. 
Mr. Loughner ignores recommendation to obtain mental health evaluation with subsequent treatment, and mental illness spirals downward resulting in criminal act. 
c. Mr. Loughner agrees to immediate voluntary surrender for comprehensive mental health evaluation and treatment allowing him to successfully coexist in society. 
Mr. Loughner refuses immediate comprehensive mental health evaluation, and is, subsequently, civilly confined resulting in diagnosis and treatment. 
Prioritize acceptable alternatives.
