Many westerners have already a pre-formed image of Arabs and Muslims in their minds. Many of which may have some relevance to the September 11 attacks which are thought of to be done by some of the Al Qaeda members .Or probably because of some other terrorist allegations and many other problems with which middle eastern countries have been accused of doing .It may be thought that westerners give Arabs the dirty look because of how their women are treated with utter intolerance ,or is it because the Arabs themselves are too engulfed with pride and do not try to blend themselves in with the western culture. For example, the Arabs who travel to London and show off with their luxurious automobiles and end up causing many accidents because of street racing.

 

Generalizations which are based on individual incidents are the leading cause to racial profiling and are biased as they do not reflect a true image. Intolerance and closed mindedness are the leading cause to not trying to make ourselves accept another person’s perspective .You as an Arab should try to prove people who think little of you, wrong. And proving them wrong is not through war or cussing but on the contrary, it is through an intellectual, respectful discussion held by both sides in order to try and resolve certain problems that the different cultures face and are challenged with daily. Try at all times not to generalize people based on certain incidents that usually do not reflect the culture or beliefs of these people. It may be accidental and it does not mirror the people’s values. We ourselves have seen according to “The Media’s Image of Arabs” (Shaheen, 1984) that racial profiling was not caused by the September 11 attacks solely but amazingly the article was written in 1984 and that proves that racial profiling has always been a problem and the way to which it is addressed has not changed whatsoever.

 

Arabs stand so strongly by their beliefs because deep down in their souls they have a solid rooted understanding about the common sense behind all of their doings and racial profiling however is arguable in such a case. Not because they are closed or stiff minded but because they act or behave in a certain way due to their religion or Shari ‘a, which is what it commands them and orders them to do. Many of which are praying, fasting and pilgrimage. It is our way of life, a belief and it belongs to our own cultural and ethical traditions. As an Arab I do not consider westerners disrespectful. On the contrary, they are preserving what they think is right according to them. The same thing we do and they are not doing anything to us in an un-human like manner. Imagine if a stranger comes over to you and tells you that you should change the way you do things in a certain manner and change the idea of what you think you are alive for, whether you liked it or not.
