摘要:The purpose of this research is to investigate the tendencies of success andfailure attribution and the features of reading strategies use for non-English majors,and attempts to explore the correlation between success and failure attributions andthe choice of English reading strategies.

earning strategy during second language acquisition, while success and failureattributions belong to learners’ individual differences, and Yang (1999) points out thatthe attribution tendencies of learners will influence their future performance andstrategy use.
Some studies on the relationship between attribution theory and learning strategyhave been conducted (Jiang,2003; Li, 2006), while reading strategy is one of theimportant parts of learning strategy research field, but few researches have been doneon the association of the attribution theory and reading strategy. so it is significant andnecessary to do research on the connection of attribution theory and reading strategy.The purpose of this research is to investigate the tendencies of success andfailure attribution and the features of reading strategies use for non-English majors,and attempts to explore the correlation between success and failure attributions andthe choice of English reading strategies.


Chapter Two literature review


In this chapter, the following parts will be presented as literature review, whichincludes studies on attribution theory, attribution in FLT studies home and abroad, thedefinition and the classification of reading strategies, previous researches on readingstrategies use abroad and at home, and the researches on the relationship betweenattribution theory and reading strategy.


2.1 Attribution


2.1.1 Attribution Theory
Attribution theory is the analysis of how people perceive past experiences ofsuccess and failure, and what results they will bring for future achievement striving(Dornyei, 2001). Causal attribution for past success and failure could be expected toinfluence motivation (Dornyei, 2001). Attribution study has shown that people’sexplanations of their experiences have a deep effect on the way they think, feel, andbehave (Jones & Davis, 1965; Jones & Nisbett, 1971; Weiner et al, 1970).Attribution theory explores how people explain their past behavior. The researchon attribution theory can date back to the middle of the last century. Socialpsychologist, Heider (1958) was the earliest person, who began discussing attributionphenomenon; Fritz Heider’s central aspect was that it was how people perceivedevents rather than the events in themselves that influenced people’s behavior. He alsopoints out that when people are asked to explain reasons for something or somebody’sbehavior, people tend to attribute to some reasons, which belong to internal (personal)and external (environmental) factors. On the basis of the hypothesis of Heider’s,Weiner and his colleagues(Weiner, 1979, 1986; Weiner & Kukla, 1970; Weiner,Russell, & Lerman, 1979) later proposed their own attribution theory, this theory was used to discuss and explain reasons of success and failure for the result ofself-behavior, so this theory could be called “self-attribution theory” or “attributiontheory of success and failure”, which was the most systematical theory for explaininglearning motivation (Zhang Chunxing, 2000).
