Chapter Five Analysis and Results


5.1 General Perceptions and Expectations of Teachers' Teaching Activities
In this section,the author wants to get the general picture of students' perceptions ofteachers' activities from two points. The first point is from the three dimensions of pre-reading phase, while-reading phase and post-reading phase, while the second point has todo with three types of schema: linguistic schema, content schema and formal schema.Thus, items of this part are not analyzed one by one but from the perspective of the abovesix categories.In case that activation or construction, instantiation, and consolidation, modificationor reconstruction of schema are realized by help of teacher's teaching activities, or way ofaction,his/her tendency of activities can be perceived by students. Here in order to gain apicture of the students' perceptions of teachers' general tendency in using teachingactivities, descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation, is carried out inthis part.

Conclusion


The present study investigates college students' perceptions and expectations ofEnglish teachers' teaching activities in reading classes in Zhejiang Gongshang Universityfrom three main dimensions (pre-reading phase, while-reading phase and post-readingphase) in terms of three kinds of schema (linguistic schema, content schema and formalschema). The results are reflections of students' perceptions and expectations on theCollege English teachers' teaching activities. From the study, the major findings aresummed up. About the three reading phases: in students' perceptions, teachers in ZhejiangGongshang University tend to pay more attention in the pre-reading phase, which wouldhelp activate and construct students' background knowledge of the text so as to facilitatethe process of reading comprehension, as well as arouse students' interest in the text; instudents' expectations, they want teachers to do well in pre-reading phase just as whattheir teachers have done. However, they also strongly expect activities in post-reading toconsolidate what they have obtained from the text.
