Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 The Background of the Research

This is because the vocational and technical collegeswill cultivate more useful personnels for our society. Many researches use the VTCstudents as the subjects. And this thesis is going to do research on the vocational andtechnical students.At the end of 1960s, error analysis became popular again after the contrastiveanalysis. It is based on the cognitive psychology. More and more researches which arebased on it were done at home and abroad. Error analysis has become one of the mostuseful theories in the area of language teaching. And this thesis is also based on erroranalysis.
1.2 The Purpose and Significance of the Research
English writing is one of the five basic abilities of learning English and it is one ofthe difficult points for English learners. It is much more difficult for the vocational andtechnical students. Most vocational and technical colleges choose English practicalwriting as the main content of the English writing course because the colleges take thepracticality of the knowledge seriously. They want their students to leam more practicaland useful things before their graduation. After graduation, the students will apply theknowledge to their jobs quickly. And the English practical writing is a very useful wayin the future communication. So the English practical writing is vital for students.However, the vocational and technical students are commonly not good at English.Therefore, how to analyze the errors in their writings correctly, how to help them reduce errors and how to improve their abilities in English practical writings are the purposesof this research.In the teaching process, the student is not the only main part. The teacher is anotherimportant part. By doing this research, the author also wants to guide the students welland finds out some effective measures for the English practical writing teaching. This isanother purpose of the research.
1.3 The Organization of the Thesis
This thesis is based on the error analysis theory. The first part is the introduction.In this part, the author introduces the background, purposes and significance of theresearch. The second part is the literature review. This part presents the contrastiveanalysis, interlanguage and error analysis theories. Part Three is the explanation of thewhole process of the experiment, including the subject,instruments and themethodology used in the study. The fourth part is the discussion and the analysis of theresults. Part Five is the conclusion.
