摘要:The present study is aimed to compare the reading comprehension componentsof CET-6 and IELTS in the aspects of reading texts and test tasks. The author believesthat this study has significance in the following three aspects.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Research Background
College English Test (CET) is one of the most important Englishachievement/proficiency tests for university non-English-major students in China. Itconsists of two bands -- CET-4 and CET-6. The test purpose of CET is to examine theEnglish achievement/proficiency of undergraduate students in China and ensure thatChinese undergraduates’ English proficiency should meet the basic-level andintermediate-level requirements specified in the National College English TeachingSyllabuses. CET-4 is targeted at the basic-level requirements and CET-6 at theintermediate-level for the students whose CET-4 scores are higher than 425 points.Since its establishment in 1987, CET has received great attention from every layer ofthe society and, hence exerts great influence on students’ educational and professionaldevelopment.International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s mostpopular standardized test of English proficiency set up in 1989 by the British Council,University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations and IDP Australia. It includes twoversions: the Academic Version and the General Training Version. The AcademicVersion is intended for those who want to enroll in universities and other institutionsof higher education and for professionals who want to study or practice in anEnglish-speaking country and the General Training version is for those who plan toundertake non-academic training or to gain working experience, or for immigration.IELTS test is accepted by more than 7000 institutions in over 135 countries andrecognized by over 3000 American universities and colleges including all Ivy LeagueColleges and most of the top 130 schools by the end of July 2010. In 2011, IELTSreinforces its position as the world’s most popular high stakes English proficiency test,hitting a new record of more than 1.7 million tests sat around all over the world.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
The present study is aimed to compare the reading comprehension componentsof CET-6 and IELTS in the aspects of reading texts and test tasks. The author believesthat this study has significance in the following three aspects.It is commonly assumed that the difficulty level of IELTS is higher than that ofCET-6. But such an assumption actually lacks solid and empirical proofs. Byconducting the current research, the author hopes to provide evidences to prove orfalsify the current widely accepted assumption.In addition, by trying to explore the degree of appropriateness of the readingcomprehension components in the aspect of content validity in CET-6 and IELTS, theresearcher wants to come up with some revealing constructive suggestions for the testdevelopers.Lastly, the results of the current contrastive study may exert a meaningfulinfluence on the teaching practice and methodologies. By knowing better about thesimilarities and differences of the two reading comprehension subtests, the teacherscan try to make some proper changes in their teaching methods selectively, which willbrings great benefits to the English course design.
