摘要:This thesis mainly has two innovations. First,innovation of study subjects. As faras the author has investigated,at present, no one compares A New English Course andContemporary College English and studies them together in academic circles.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background of the Study
With the continuous reform and extensive opening-up policy, especially after ourcountry enters the WTO, every field,including politics, economics, finance,technology,culture and the military etc,communicates and cooperates with othercountries more frequently than before. Every walk of life needs more and moreexcellent English talents. Society not only needs graduates who know English but alsoneeds profound,knowledgeable, healthy, well-qualified and all-round English talents.Cultivation of high-leveled and well-qualified English talents can not be alienatedfrom good English coursebooks,while contents and forms of coursebooks shouldchange with requirements of flie society. As the famous scholar Dai Weidong says,English teaching in the 21st Century is not only English training, but Englisheducation to train excellent all-round talents. Compilation and publication ofcoursebooks shouM also go with the stream.Since the reform and opening, a series of good coursebooks for English majorshave appeared in China, e.g. English (by Xu Guozhang), A New English Course (byLi Guanyi), advanced English (by Zhang Hanxi), Contemporary College English (byYang Limin), and An Integrated English Course (by He Zhaoxiong), which canstimulate English teaching.College years are the key period of forming students' outlook on life and worldview. In all English courses of basic phase, basic English is one of the main coursesthroughout the first two years and counts a lot Basic English coursebook is the mainsource of language input and plays an important role.

1.2 Significance and Necessity of the Study
The essence of coursebook evaluation is a process of analyzing its validity,reliability, feasibility and effect. Theoretically, coursebook evaluation has thefollowing functions: 1. diagnosis function. Coursebook evaluation is to know teachingeffect and know how coursebook structure and function realize teaching aims. 2.stimulant function. Coursebook evaluation can improve coursebook designationfurther. 3. adjustment ftinction. From the result of analysis, readers can find the reasonof coursebook success or failure and improve coursebook designation, compilation,use,feedback and revision. So coursebook evaluation forms a controllable goodcircle and improves coursebook quality continuously. 4. development function.Coursebook evaluation can promote full development of coursebook constructionfurther.The aim of basic English coursebook analysis and evaluation is to study howcoursebooks help students study and teachers teach well. Firstly, to choose acoursebook, it must be taken into consideration that its teaching aim accords withteacher's teaching plan, student's study aim and user's actual conditions. Secondly,coursebook evaluation is to test effect of coursebook. The key point of coursebookevaluation is to exam whether coursebook fits student's level,satisfies students' need,and helps students make progress. And it is also to prove whether the compiler's ideaand intention are shown during the use and where it needs revision. Thirdly,coursebook evaluation is the foundation of compilation. Coursebook evaluation canhelp compilers find weakness of coursebook and also help compilers keep strength ofcoursebook to compile better coursebooks for Reference.
