Chapter 2 Literature Review
2.1 Definitions of assignment
In Webster online dictionary, the definitions for the word assignment are likethis: 1. an action of assigning; 2. A: a task, office, or position to which somebody isgiven; B: a task, job or work given by the authority. In Longman Dictionary ofAmerican English (2004), the definitions of the word assignment are as follows:Noun. 1. a job or piece of work that you are given to do; 2. the act of giving peopleparticular jobs to do. In Advanced Learner s English-Chinese Dictionary publishedby The Commercial Press and Oxford University Press (2004), we found thefollowing definitions: Noun, 1. a task or a piece of work that somebody is given todo, usually as part of their job or studies; 2. the act of giving something to somebody,the act of giving somebody a particular task.Some domestic English education scholars have made their explanation on theword assignment as follows: Assignment is the necessary complement of theactivities of school learning and teaching. School teachers use assignment toimprove students ability to grasp and consolidate knowledge. Teachers can also findout how well their students have learned, and then they can adjust their ways ofteaching to get a better teaching and learning effect by means of checking andcorrecting students assignment (Wu Liping, 2007). Assignment is a kind of task oflearning that usually is given by school teachers of a certain subject, and students aresupposed to finish it at school. Because students are usually required to take the taskback home to complete, it is therefore called homework (Mou Jinjiang and LuoXiaojie, 2006).

2.2 Researches on quantity of assignments abroad
Before this study, a great number of researches have been carried out on thetheme of the relationship between assignment and students achievements. Theauthor has studied these researches of many scholars from some foreign countriesand has realized some of their main findings about assignment and achievements. Inmany of the researches, mainly organized by developed countries scholars, it isobviously indicated that there is much stronger positive relationship for secondarystudents than primary school students. On the other hand, we can also hear somenegative voices about the effect of assignments after school. Bempechat (2004)made the finding that in secondary and high schools, the quantity of assignmentcompleted by students is positively associated with their academic achievements. Ittells us that students assignments improve their achievements. So, if students do notdo any assignments, their grades will fall and their academic achievement will sufferfor sure. In much the same way, students will improve their performance andincrease their grades if they do their assignments.
