摘要:The main purpose of the study is to illustrate the significant role relevance playsin the process of turn-taking and the way mutual knowledge works. It also mentionsthe special features of turn-taking in English top talk.
2.2 Previous Studies on Turn-taking System
The study on turn-taking has been made even further, from the study of thebasic conceptions to the specific conversations in recent years. Most scholars paymore attention to the case studies by experimental methods. And the data analysiscomes into the stage of their main means. Jennifer Coates and Rachel Sutton-Spence (2001) had made research on the conversations in classes in a deaf school. Theypointed out that gestures could make continuous conversations realized as well asverbal language. Gestures as nonverbal communication has advantages over verballanguage on that interlocutor could selectively grasp the following direction of theturn in conversations. This leads turn-taking study to the area of visual conversationanalysis. Schegloff put turn-taking under the study of communication contents andmodes. He thought that turns could join together to be a bigger unit, and the changingturns forming the bigger unit are caused by the exchange of topic. This aspect of studyon turn-taking pushed the almost 30 years’ study from the form level to thecombination of form and contents. As once Schegloff said that the key factor whichdecides the construction of turn and turn-taking is the contents of communication, andwe should try to seek the regular patterns of turn-taking from the perspective ofcontents. Studies on turn-taking abroad are also expanded to the area of psychologyand computational linguistics. But the researches on perspectives of sociolinguisticsand pragmatics are even further. We will explain previous studies made by formerscholars in the following aspects.
