Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Background of the Study
As human beings, we tend to communicate with others to express our ideas. Wetry to show our thoughts in various ways, such as verbal communication, gestures,written materials and so on. Among all these ways of communication, it seems thatverbal communication is one of the most important and most convenient humanactivities in our life. It is an indispensable part of our life. Usually, we could speakfreely in daily life and even sometimes we just utter the sentences unconsciouslywithout thinking for a second time. We just talk to people to express ideas, to getmore information about things we are interested in and to have a better understandingof the world. All these activities have attracted many scholars and linguists whodevote most of his life to language. Scholars of the related fields such associolinguistics, anthropology have made many researches on verbal communication.And the field many scholars working on can be called conversational analysis.People take turns to talk in conversations. One would give out his commentaccording to his understanding of the other’s words. By doing so, conversations couldcarry on until one wants to end it. As one of the most important phenomenon,turn-taking has aroused the interest of many researchers. The term “turn-taking” wasfirst proposed by Harvey Sacks and Jeffeson in the 1960s’ and 1970s’. They pointedout that the character of conversation is that people take turns to talk. Harvey and hiscolleagues have made a comprehensive study of the turn-taking organization in everyday conversation. They finally summed up a set of important characteristics ofturn-taking organization and put forward a turn-taking model.

1.2 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of the study is to illustrate the significant role relevance playsin the process of turn-taking and the way mutual knowledge works. It also mentionsthe special features of turn-taking in English top talk. First, the writer makes acomprehensive review of the previous studies on turn-taking. Then the relatedtheories are introduced as the theoretical basis for analysis, especially RelevanceTheory. On the basis of the previous studies, the thesis tries to explore turn-taking indetail. How does response turn relate with stimulus turn and the pre-existing contextin top talk? How is mutual knowledge established? How does mutual knowledgeaffect the following turn-takings in return. All these questions are listed to stateclearly why people take turns to talk smoothly. It is also expected that the study willcontribute to intercultural communication and bring hints to foreign language learningand teaching.

Chapter 2 Literature Review


2.1 Definition and Explanation
Definitions and explanations about turn-taking have been talked by manyresearcher working on conversational analysis. Although the definitions made byscholar are different in certain degree, the basic recognitions of turn-taking are almostthe same thing. The terms “turn” and “turn-taking” are listed in the following parts. As for the origin of the term “turn”, it was first proposed by Sacks, the founderof conversation analytic method.
