On the other hand, we should know whether the targeted stakeholders canread the mission statements easily and with interest. If a mission statement were notreadable to the targeted stakeholders, the communication between the business schools andthe stakeholders would be a failure. Therefore, both the quality and readability of missionstatements are inseparable. On the basis of previous research, this thesis made a new try forthe comparison of mission statements of business schools in different cultural andsystematic background by integrating the quality of mission statements with the readabilityof mission statements.

CHAPTER II THEORETICAL BASIS AND LITERATURE REVIEW


2.1 Definitions of Key Terms
Cihai in China explains the word mission as the envoy obeys the order and visitssome places. Now, it refers to important affairs or tasks.Peter Drucker(1973) put forward three classical questions---What is our business?What will be our business? What should be our business? The widely accepted opinionabout mission, which is popular in the field of management, to a large extent, regarded thethree classical questions and the related set of ideas provided by Peter Drucker (1973) asthe guiding principles. The related literature on mission in the strategic research indicatesthat mission has the similar meaning with vision and goal.As for the cultural construction of corporations, Lin Jianhuang (2004) believes that“mission is the spiritual motive and is similar with the corporations’ vision. What’s more,mission is the ultimate goal of corporations and the official organization goal. ”Therefore, the author believes that mission refers to the important tasks of anorganization and is similar to vision and goal of the organization.

2.2 Previous Research on Stakeholder Theory
The stakeholder theory is a theory of organizational management and business ethicsthat addresses morals and values in managing an organization. It was originally detailed by R. Edward Freeman (1984) in the book Strategic Management: A Stakeholder Approachidentifies and models the groups which are stakeholders of a corporation, and both describesand recommends methods by which management can give due regard to the interests ofthose groups. In short, it attempts to address the 'principle of who or what really counts'.In the traditional view of a company, the shareholder view, only the owners orshareholders of the company are important, and the company has a binding fiduciary duty toput their needs first, to increase value for them. Stakeholder theory instead argues that thereare other parties involved, including employees, customers, suppliers, financiers,communities, governmental bodies, political groups, trade associations, and trade unions.Even competitors are sometimes counted as stakeholders – their status being derived fromtheir capacity to affect the firm and its stakeholders. The nature of what is a stakeholder ishighly contested (Miles, 2012), with hundreds of definitions existing in the academicliterature (Miles, 2011).The stakeholder view of strategy integrates both a resource-based view and amarket-based view, and adds a socio-political level.
