4.1   Introduction 

This  thesis  has  collected  antonymous  compounds  from  three  authoritative dictionaries  as  our  research  objects.  And  it  attempted  to  analyze  the  grammatical categories  and  usage  patterns  of  antonymous  compounds  in  Chinese  through corpus-based investigations, and to explain the findings and improve the word class representations of antonymous compounds in the C-E dictionaries according to Wang Renqiang’s  theoretical  model  of  two-level  word  class  categorization  in  analytic languages. Here are the results and discussion. This  paper  has  collected  269  antonymous  compounds  from  three  dictionaries, among which there are 12 words not included in every dictionary, so finally we get 257 antonymous compounds as our object. There are few polyphones treated differently in these three dictionaries, so this research processes this type of word for an entry. For example,  厚薄  (báo/ bó). We have found that the word class labeling of 48 entries are not  the  same.  And  the  other  209  entries  are  labeled  completely  the  same  in  three dictionaries.

Conclusion  

This  thesis  has  collected  269  antonymous  compounds  from  three  authoritative dictionaries as our research objects, namely CED3, NCCED (2004), and CCD6. This study analyzes word class labeling of antonymous compounds with the support of CCL corpus and CCTV.com corpus based on Wang Renqiang’s theoretical model of two-level word class categorization in analytic languages.  In this chapter, we firstly present major findings of the study, and then limitations and suggestions for further research.
