Pragmatics has occupied important status and made great progress in recentyears. Linguists have made a great deal of studies on pragmatic phenomenon andconversation occupies an important position in our daily communication. This thesistries to apply some basic pragmatic theories, covering the cooperative principle, thepoliteness principle speech act theory, to analyzing the dialogues in Jane Eyre, one ofthe excellent classical novels, written by Charlotte Bront?. In an effectiveconversation, the people who speak always try to make themselves understood byhearers and their intentions are conveyed directly or indirectly. This example below isa typical daily dialogue quoted from Jane Eyre,Pragmatics has occupied important status and made great progress in recentyears. Linguists have made a great deal of studies on pragmatic phenomenon andconversation occupies an important position in our daily communication. This thesistries to apply some basic pragmatic theories, covering the cooperative principle, thepoliteness principTherefore, the purpose of my thesis is that I’m very interested in CP and Englishpopular novels—taking Jane Eyre as an example—I want to analyze CI from theperspective of CP proposed by Grice. Even though CP is not a new theory—therewere many studies about it in China—it has been under the hot discussion and it hasthe greatest formative effect on pragmatics. I will make the most use of the originaland fundamental theories and try my best to find something new and valuable.

1.2ABrief Introduction to Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre was written by the well-known British novelist Charlotte Bront?which is her most prominent magnum opus and widely considered to be herautobiography. The novel mainly tells about an orphaned English woman in manyhardships consistently pursues her freedom and dignity and try to be herself. Finallyshe is independent physically and mentally, and got her own happiness with herbeloved. The novel not only shows us the ups and downs of the hero and the heroin’slove experience, but it also eulogizes Jane’s courage to get rid of old customs andprejudice. It successfully creates an image of a woman who dares to struggle for herfreedom and equal status. In the following paragraphs we can have a plot overview ofthis novel in detail.Jane became an orphan when she was very young and she was sent to her UncleReed’s Gateshead as a dependent. Unfortunately, her uncle passed away very soon.After his death, Jane—the despised, outcast, unprotected child—was nearly excluded by her hardhearted aunt Mrs. Reed and bullied by her unpleasant cousins for totally10 years. Mrs. Reed regarded Jane as a drag and separated Jane from her dear children.She could not stand anymore and fought against them.Later, Mrs. Reed followed the apothecary’s advice and allowed Mr. Brockleburstto take Jane to Lowood School. However, the owner was cruel as well and called Janea liar in front of the class. Jane suffered so much there and got accustomed to the newenvironment. She was so lucky to survive and had a friend, Helen. She changedherself in many ways and got the position as a teacher there after 8 years. She becametired with the life there especially after the wedding and separated from Miss Temple,who was regarded as the best companion to Jane.
