2.2   Functions of Inversion
Grammatical  inversion  is  to  be  used  according  to  grammatical  or  idiomatic usages.  Grammatically,  it  is  indispensable.  Without  grammatical  inversion,  it  would appear  many  grammatical  mistakes  in  the sentences.  The  application  of  grammatical inversion  depends  on  grammatical  rules  and  conventions.  It  is  used  to  achieve  the aims of making sentences more reasonable and grammatical, and function rhetorically. Rhetorical inversion is entirely different. It depends on the figure of speech and styles which  have  rich  rhetorical  effects.  In  a  word,  both  grammatical  inversion  and rhetorical inversion have important rhetorical functions. The author will list the most common functions of inversion as follows:   In  English  figure  of  speech,  there  are  kinds  of  ways  to  make  emphases.  Some can  stress  words  or  phrases  and  others  may  use  the  emphatic  patterns  to  realize  the emphatic aims. Inversion is a vital way to make emphases. Some constituents can be payed  more  attention  to  inverted  sentences  which  cannot  be  emphasized  in  normal word order. In the inverted sentences, the parts which need to be emphasized can be put forward to the ending of the sentences in order to attract readers and listeners.  E.g. Never have I seen her so happy.Negative words or phrases initiate the sentence and form inverted construction.
