摘要:在本文中,笔者认为英语教学的重要性在于教学法,而认知语言学的图形理论是英语倒装句子的理论基础,并将该理论用于英语教学中,对于英语教学提升是有帮助的。

Chapter 1 Int roduction


1.1 Background of the Study
As for English teaching, the most essential and tough part could be the English grammarteaching. It seems that the grammar is all settled rules, without any reasonable explanations.This indecipherable attribute of English grammar has caused trouble for teachers to explainand students to understand and acquire. Besides, the English grammar is not that entertaining,so many students can not get the obscure usage and the abstract meaning of the grammar. TheEnglish Inversion is an important part of the English grammar, and also it is pretty difficultfor the Chinese students. The teaching approach of the Inversion grammar always follows aroutine pattern, which is explained by the teacher through sentences and examples, and thenplenty of after class exercises were continued. Instead of explaining the deep meaning and thefundamental principle of the grammar, the traditional method forces the students to memorizethe grammar rules rigidly. Many students can not completely understand the Inversion, andthey can seldom put them properly used.In recent years, the cognitive linguistics has developed rapidly and shown great potentialin explaining language phenomena. The fundamental assumption of the cognitive linguistic isthat all the language phenomena are connected with each other through the way of cognition,for they are all motivated by the same force and driven by the understanding of the world.[1]As one of the most influential cognitive theories, the Figure-Ground Theory (in order toachieve briefness and convenience, it will be shorten as the FGT in the following chapters)shows great potential in explaining the language phenomena. Scholars begin to pay attentionto this prominence view only recently. However, owing to its mighty explanatory power, therehave plenty of achievements.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
The cognitive linguistics has shown a great potential in explaining the English Inversion,after further research, one can find out that employing the FGT to interpret the EnglishInversion can be persuasive and fit perfectly. Given the situation mentioned above, theChinese students can not acquire this grammar rules smoothly. Hence, the author applied theFGT to analyze the English Inversion to the students, and this thesis conducted a comparativeteaching experiment between two comparable classes.This paper endeavors to find out the answers to the following questions:(1) Are there any different effects between the cognitive teaching approach and thetraditional teaching approach when it comes to teaching English Inversion?(2) If there are different effects, which of the two teaching methods can help studentsbetter understand and master the English Inversion?This thesis has great significance in English Inversion teaching and learning boththeoretically and practically. The English Inversion is an important language pattern as well asan outcome of people’s cognition. It is a huge step in the theoretical level to manifest theEnglish Inversion from the perspective of FGT. At the same time, the thesis combines theEnglish Inversion with the FGT to constitute a new cognitive teaching method, and thenapplies this teaching method to the actual English Inversion teaching, which makes thisgrammar more understandable to the students.
