Chapter 4   Enlightenment of Howard Goldblatt’s Bifurcated Cultural Attitudes to Literary Translation 

4.1   Influences of Howard Goldblatt’s Bifurcated Cultural Attitudes on Translation Strategy 
Lawrence Venuti studies the relationship between translators’ cultural attitudes and the selection of their translation st rategy based on the study of Japanese novels’ translation  and  the trans lation  of  Aristotle’s  On  Poetry.  He  points out that am ong various factors that m ay influence the transl ation process, translator ’s attitudes and understanding  of the t arget  language  culture  and cognition of his own country’ s culture are the m ost important factors that  will decide the trans lation strategy. (Xu, 2014, p.38)   Translator’s culture attitudes can directly influence the selection of translation strategy.  After the s election  of works,  translators  will en counter  the  question of choosing  his culture attitud es.  Translators  have  at leas t  three option s  of cultural attitudes and standpoints. The first condition is to translate from the standpoint of the original language cultural. The second is to  translate from the standpoint of the target language culture. The third condi tion is that translators tran slate out of the wish of cultural communication between original language culture and target language culture. (Xu, 2014, pp.36-37) The bifurcated cultural attitudes here refer to the third condition.

Conclusion  

This chapter recounts the major findings of the study, puts forward suggestions for the future research and outlines the limitations of this study.  This  paper focuses on analyzing Howard Goldblatt’ s  bifurcated cultural attitudes in the translation of Tales of Hulan River. And there are mainly four findings. First, based on the study of Howard’ s life experiences, education backgrounds and Chinese complex in 3.3, the author finds  that Howard has a gr eat possibility of the  bifurcated cultu ral  attitudes.As  an Am erican,  Howard certain ly  possesses  his American  identity and  cognition.  While,  his  special lif e  experiences, educatio n background  and his identity as a sinologi st  endows him  a special feeling towards Chinese culture when he translates Hulan He Zhuan. Second, by analyzing Tales of Hulan River, the first translated work of Howard Goldblatt, the author can studies his cultur al attitudes more accurately and directly . Through the study of the text and paratext, the author finds that Goldblatt employs the combination of domestication and fo reignization in the tran slation of Tales of Hulan River,  which  avoids th e  extreme  domestication  or f oreignization  in tr anslation  and endeavors to achieve the purpose of transmission and communication.
