CHAPTER II    LITERA TURE REVIEW

In this chapter, major concepts related to the present research will be introduced. These  major  concepts are helpful to unders tand  the theoretical fram ework  and the whole research. Besides, the origin and development of critical discourse analysis will be reviewed both at home and abroad.

2.1 Definitions of Key Terms
News is packaged inform ation about new events happening som ewhere else; or, alternatively, news is that which the ne ws industry sells. Many scholars have given diverse  kinds of definitions of news and  studied  it from  various aspects such as journalistic perspective, linguistic perspective, sociological perspective, psychological perspective,  and etc. B ennett  (125) from  journalistic  perspective defines news as “information that is timely, relevant to the concerns of its audience, and presented in a form that is easy to grasp”. Traditionally, news is considered as a report, and reporters just cover the story, telling the public what is happening. According to Jamieson, news is selected or even created by people. That is to say, news is not the fact, but rhetoric messages  influencing how audience perceives the events. In fact, Ja mieson’s definition to news is in accord with Fowler’s. Fowler (4) critically interpreted news to be a presentation of the world, not only soci ally but also politica lly influenced, with the  opinion that news reveals the operati on  of the society .  In the present study , definition  of  news put f orward  by  Fowler will b e  employed  because  Fowler’s definition is related to functions of the critical discourse analysis that is to reveal the ideologies hidden in the news language. In our daily life, news has been categorized into different parts, such as politica l news, cultural news and business news and so  on. Business that refers to the activity of making money by producing  or buying and selling goods,  or providing services is one of the most important things in the whole world which is the main role playing in maintaining  the econo mic  balance everywhere in this planet. Therefo re,  more  and more pieces of news about business have been reported. In this paper, business news is  considered as news re ports  about an or ganization  that  produces, sells goods or provides a service, revealing the operation of the society and hidden ideologies. The  journalists usually create the news  through five “W s”  (who, what, when, where,  why) and one “H” (how). However ,  because of dif ferent  kinds of reasons, news report is not just simple and clear stories, but it is always ambiguity, unclarity, discrepancy and cavity (Bell 66).
