1.2 Objective of the Study 
This  paper  is  a  text-based  CMC  analysis,  focusing  on  the  participants’ interaction by means of the written words. Computer-mediated communication tools have greatly expanded the opportunities for researchers to share their point-of-view in online settings. Online discussions, blogs, and bulletin boards make it quite easy for faculty  members  to  share  their  thoughts,  argue  about  current  issues,  and  give  others advice.  As  a  global  knowledge  and  learning  community,  dialogin  also  offers  new possibilities  for  discussion  or  debate,  which  provides  a  number  of  forums  that  deal with various topics for all members to discuss issues in the field, propose request and share personal idea about certain topic. Therefore, analysis of these discussion forums allows  us  to  explore  how  participants  show  awareness  of  other  people’s  face  wants and mitigate face threatening from the view of Brown & Levinson’s politeness theory. This  paper  is  aimed  to  investigate  the  mitigation  devices  employed  in non-face-to-face settings with reference to Brown & Levinson’s (1987) classification of  on-  and  off-  record  politeness  strategies.  Meanwhile,  the  analysis  of  linguistic politeness also focuses on features of the strategies used in the particular context and reasons that contribute to the features. It is hoped that the results can help other peers interact more smoothly.

CHAPTER II LITERATURE REVIEW 

Politeness,  as  a  pragmatic  phenomenon,  is  no  longer  a  new  topic  in  linguistic field,  but  it  has  been  extensively  studied  in  the  last  few  decades  in  different circumstances  from  face-to-face  activities  to  written  discourse.  But  there  are  a  few studies on the linguistic politeness in non-face-to-face communication. The following will review studies on linguistic politeness and online discourse respectively.   

2.1 Linguistic Politeness
