sp;linguistics, Bloomfield’s descriptive linguistics theory and Chomsky’s transformational and generative linguistics all offer analytical methods for formal stylistics, while the method of functional stylistics is mainly based on Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics. Regarding to the analysis of the literature works, the analytical method also derives from literary criticism and rhetoric, such as rhetorical devices, narrative point of view, as well as speech and thought presentation which are taken into account in stylistic analysis. The seemingly complicated method is precisely the advantage of the stylistic methodology: it is not constrained by a single methodology, but synthetically adopts various methods in terms of the object of study, so as to make the research bear more pertinence and flexibility. History of literary and linguistic thought fails to arrive at a precise meaning to it. Different definitions express important views on style, but there is still something in common among them.
