s,  Maxine  Hong Kingston  turns  out  to  be  one  of  the  most  self-reflexive,  most  language  conscious  writers. Specially, it is cultural and linguistic differences that seem to preoccupy Kingston, and that she  keeps  coming  back  to  over  and  over  again  in  her  books:  the  difference  between  her father’s speech and her mother’s, between one Chinese regional dialect and another, between the cultural habits of the older generation of Chinese emigrant and the younger. In Kingston’s works, she hybridizes different varieties of language, including Standard English, Cantonese, Chinese pidgins English, dialects and so on. Of all these cultural and linguistic difference, it is the one between English and Chinese that concerns Kingston most, a difference she keeps coming back to with the greatest insistence.

Conclusion

Based on the previous studies which are mainly done from the perspective of literary criticism  on  the  cultural  hybridity  in  Kingston’s  three  novels,  this  thesis  gives  a  stylistic analysis  of  The  Woman  Warrior,  China  Men  and  Tripmaster  Monkey  from  the  aspects  of  linguistic description, narrative style, and contextual factors. In the aspect of linguistic description, the hybridity is mainly manifested in the deviation of  sound  patterns,  vocabulary  and  grammar  used  by  Kingston.  In  the  depiction  of  sound patterns,  Kingston  deliberately  intimates  the  accents  of  Chinese  American  immigrants  by inserting and interchanging vowels, replacing some fricatives by their corresponding stops, and adopting onomatopoeia which is produced especially by Chinese immigrants. In this way, Kingston  creates  a  sense  of  hybrid  sound  atmosphere  within  her  novels.  In  the  aspect  of vocabulary  choices,  Kingston  adopts  the  strategy  of  translation  the  words  of  Chinese  and Cantonese spoken by the Chinese immigrants in most cases, thus there is a large number of calques  on  characters’  Chinese  names  and  Chinese  idiomatic  phrases.  Besides,  she  also creates  neologism  by  joining  words  together,  which  aims  to  emphasize  the  impact  that cultural  difference  has  brought  to  Chinese  American  Community.  Moreover,  in  her  later writings,  especially  in  Tripmaster  Monkey,  Kingston  directly  embeds  Cantonese,  Chinese characters and Chinese pidgins English into her work, which reveals her clearer attitude of cultural  hybridity.  In  respect  of  grammar,  the  hybridity  is  taken  on  the  application  of ungrammatical sentences which are usually embodied in consistent omission of 本论文由英语论文网提供整理，提供论文代写，英语论文代写，代写论文，代写英语论文，代写留学生论文，代写英文论文，留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
